Welcome to Young School

Teamwork...The Young School Success Factor
Dr. Peter E. Harrison, Principal

A Message from the Principal!

The Young School community is committed to providing learners with an excellent educational program. Our dedicated staff recognizes that each of our students bears unique qualities that may often require an instructional response that is adapted to meet their individual needs. To this end we embrace a “Shared Statement of Commitment” that reads as follows:

Shared Statement of Commitment

Young School is committed to building a collaborative learning community of students, parents, and school staff.

Our school community respects the differences among learners and responds to their individual needs. We provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes intellectual, social, emotional, and physical achievement.

We encourage the development of our core values, including honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, citizenship, and fairness; and we celebrate our success in this endeavor.

Your child’s achievement in school is a reflection of the purposeful efforts put forth by many people, including your child, you, siblings, grandparents, family friends, teachers, principal, teacher teams, Parent Teacher Organization, and others. Your child is receiving an impressive level of support as he/she strives to achieve academic and social expectations.

The Young School experience will be memorable for you and your child(ren). The “twirly slide” is often high on the list of responses to the question, “What did you do in school today?” We want you to enjoy the journey through Young School. There are sure to be “ups and downs”, though mostly “ups” for your kids. It is a certainty that you will respond to your child’s stories about school with emotion. We know that you love them and it’s your job to take care of them. Your full commitment to the educational process includes extending your trust to us as we work to deliver the most effective instruction to your child. We recognize you as a partner in this process. Classroom teachers will keep you well informed regarding curricula, assessment, special programs, and volunteer opportunities through their weekly newsletter. We look forward to developing a respectful relationship with you, one that reflects our mutual interests in supporting your child’s learning experience at Young School. So please, be sure to ask your child, “What else did your do in school today, besides going on the “twirly slide?”

Best wishes for a happy and healthy school year. In preparing your child to be the best student possible, please keep in mind the following message:

“5210 Goes To School”

5 - Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables on most days.
2 - Limit screen time to 2 hours or less daily.
1 - Participate in at least 1 hour or more of physical activity every
day.
0 - Encourage water and low-fat or fat-free milk instead of soda and
sugar sweetened drinks.

“Enjoy a good book with your child”
