Several teachers from CK Burns School came together for a couple of days this summer to work on developing a framework for reading instruction throughout the year. The group used the work of Frank Serafini to guide their decision making. This study group continues to meet once a month to share ideas for reading instruction for students in their grade levels.

A Vision For Proficient Readers

As teachers at C.K. Burns School, we to develop and support readers who....

  • Find a place for reading in their lives
  • Enjoy reading and its challenges
  • Use a variety of strategies to make sense of texts
  • Are willing and able to generate, articulate, and negotiate interpretations
  • Become emotionally invested in what they read
  • Read a wide variety of text
  • Understand that images and texts may have meanings beyond what is represented
  • Understand that texts are social artifacts
