Young School students and teachers are engaged in a teaching-learning process that is marked by our Shared Statement of Commitment, Maine’s Learning Results, and local curriculum. Everyday at Young School your child receives a personal welcome to explore carefully designed educational experiences. We recognize that each of our students brings a unique set of gifts and needs to the classroom. The challenge that we share with you is to define the characteristics of each student and use them to inform our instructional planning. Our combined efforts will result in the kind of educational experiences students need in order to develop the following personal areas:
* Clear and Effective Communicator
* A Self-Directed and Lifelong Learner
* A Creative and Practical Problem Solver
* A Responsible and Involved Citizen
* A Collaborative and Quality Worker
* An Integrative and Informed Thinker
Communicating with your child’s classroom teacher(s) is an incredibly important responsibility that each parent has been extended as a result of becoming a parent of a school-aged child. Learning about the school experiences that your child is involved with can occur in a variety of ways, including your active participation as a volunteer in the classroom, reading the weekly newsletter that is written by your child’s teacher, contributions to the Young School P.T.O., and being well prepared to engage in a meaningful Parent-Teacher Conference. A few tips to consider when meeting with your child’s teacher, as follows:
* Ask your child if there are any questions that he/she would like you to address with the teacher on their behalf.
* Write down the questions that you have and bring them to the conference with you.
* Bring a notepad with you. These notes will be helpful as you reflect on the meeting.
* Keep the conference focused on your child, and avoid going off on tangents about mutual friends or your other
children, for example.
* Listen actively to what your child’s teacher is sharing.
* When the teacher shares the areas where your child needs to grow, avoid becoming defensive. Instead, listen
intently and ask follow-up questions relative to how you can support your child in developing in these identified areas.
* Ask what you can do at home to complement what is happening in the classroom.
* Another question may be... When reading to my child at home, are there any “tips” that you would recommend?
* Communicate your commitment to be a full partner in helping your child achieve the educational goals that he/she will be challenged with over the course of this school year.
Enjoy the Precious Time That You Have With Your Child
